Additional fees for day trips will become a reality.
Venice will introduce a new tax for visiting tourists
Venice will introduce city fees in a trial mode next year, after initially delaying this is the decision.
A fee of €5 per person will be charged to all travelers over 14 years old who come to the famous canal city for a day, Reuters reports, citing the city council.
< p> The fee will be introduced on an experimental basis, mainly during the spring holidays and summer weekends, when the city is most crowded. An exact date for the introduction of the tax has not yet been announced.
Venice tourist board member Simone Venturini told the agency that the goal is to find “a new balance between the rights of those who live, study or work in Venice, and those who visit the city.
Venice first put forward the idea of introducing a fee for visiting the city for day trippers in 2019, but its adoption was delayed, in particular due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The city then considered introducing the tax in 2022, then postponed it again until 2023, and then postponed it again.
The daily tax is being introduced to prevent an overgrowth of tourism in the city, which many tourists, people who come to Italy are called “must visit”. As Reuters notes, there are often more tourists in the city than residents.
