Tourist faces jail time for writing on Colosseum wall
American Tourist used a key to carve out “Ivan + Hayley 2023” on the wall of a 2000-year-old landmark. A passer-by filmed what was happening on video, which was later posted on social networks and received tens of thousands of views.
Netizens hope that the vandals will be found and punished, as their faces are known.
According to according to Italian law, an attacker, if caught, faces a fine of 20 thousand euros and possible imprisonment, since the Colosseum is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
This is not the first time that tourists behave inappropriately at the Colosseum. In 2020, a visitor from Ireland scrawled his initials on a wall and was detained with a €20,000 fine. In March 2015, two American tourists also paid a fine of the same amount for a similar action. In 2022, a Lebanese traveler was also fined after painting a similar graffiti on a wall.
