Experts have identified the reasons for what is happening.
The beaches of Cyprus will disappear from the face of the Earth
Scientists have reported that more than half of Cyprus' beaches could be flooded by the end of the 21st century due to climate change. To prevent this, action must be taken now to strengthen the coastline.
Using satellite imagery, researchers have identified 241 “unprotected” beach, mostly narrow sandy strips. The erosion of these beaches is accelerating due to sea level rise and severe storms.
Scientists analyzed sea level rise along the coast at different concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, as well as the frequency and strength of storms in various climate scenarios.
It turned out that even with an optimistic forecast by 2050, about 29% of the “unprotected” beaches will be under water, and by 2100 — already 72%. In the worst case, by the end of the century, all these beaches will be flooded.
