On June 28, the opening of the country's first “smart city” took place in Turkmenistan. This event was timed to coincide with the birthday of former President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov. The opening ceremony was attended by the current president of Turkmenistan, Serdar Berdimuhamedov.

The new city was named Arkadag and is located 30 km from Ashgabat. It was created on the basis of the concept of a “smart city”.

At the moment, Arkadag is not yet populated, as the life support systems are not fully functioning.

At the first stage of the construction of urban facilities, it was more than $3.3 billion has been spent, and more than $2 billion will be needed to build production facilities.
