According to the Secretary General of the ruling party “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia” and Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, the popular Georgian resort of Shovi was completely destroyed in a massive landslide.
“You can say that Shovi no longer exists, it was completely destroyed,” he said after touring the disaster area . Kaladze also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and thanked those involved in the search and rescue operations.
Recall that a landslide occurred in the Shovi resort on August 3. About 400 rescuers and more than 200 military personnel are involved in the search for people, as well as helicopters, drones and special equipment. According to the latest data, 17 people died as a result of the landslide, including one Russian woman. August 7 is declared a day of mourning in Georgia.
Specialists of the National Environmental Agency of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia came to the conclusion that a partial collapse of the Buba glacier, located higher up the gorge, caused a landslide in the Shovi resort in the mountainous area of Racha.
This is due to several geological and hydrometeorological phenomena, such as intensive melting of the glacier due to climate change, rains, rockslides in the upper part, landslide-erosion processes and mudflows.
