Thai authorities have proposed an exit tax.
New tourist tax in Thailand
Thai Department of Revenue Proposes 'Departure Tax' in the amount of 1000 baht (about 2 thousand rubles) for all departing from the country, both for Thais and for foreign tourists. For those who leave the country by land or water, there will also be a tax, but at a lower rate of 500 baht.
Thus, local authorities want to “keep locals from spending too much money abroad.” However, so far this tax proposal is only at the level of an Internet survey. It invites the public to provide input by May 17.
Tourism officials have been less than enthusiastic about the idea, saying the tax will hurt Thailand's rebounding tourism industry. In addition, the departure tax will potentially become an additional problem for airlines.
