Above the body of the saint, which was drowned after martyrdom in the waters of the Vltava, a bright star rose. Soon the monks removed the body from the water and buried it. Later, during the process of reburial and exhumation, a whole unharmed tongue was found in the skull of the saint. Karlštejn Castle became one of the symbols of the Czech kingdom during the heyday of Gothic architecture. It is also one of the most visited castles in the Czech Republic, due to its proximity to the Czech capital and the location of this attraction on the world-famous Castle Road, a tourist route that unites the most beautiful palaces in the Czech Republic. The castle was founded in the early 14th century by the Czech king as a summer residence. The whole complex, located at different height levels, consists of two parts – the Upper and Lower Castle. On the upper level is the Imperial Palace, two towers, the Church of the Virgin Mary. Initially, all city buildings were built of wood, but a fire in the 14th century destroyed almost all buildings to the ground. The castle is often referred to as the “carved wonder of the Czech Republic” due to its carved wooden interiors, made by the famous carver Petr Busek. The historic village of Holasovice clearly demonstrates how the Czech village lived in past centuries. The layout of buildings here has not changed over the centuries, so the colored houses that can be seen on the streets have been preserved mainly from the 18th and 19th centuries. In general, the history of this settlement is mentioned in sources from the 13th century, and in the 16th century, almost the entire population of the village died out due to the bubonic plague. This region survived many more trials, including the events of the Third Reich, and only in 1990 did its restoration and settlement begin. Today, the village is home to about one and a half hundred inhabitants.
