New — part of the fight against antisocial behavior — were adopted after a series of traffic violations committed by foreigners. From now on, the Indonesian island of Bali bans tourists from renting motorcycles.

Instead, visitors will be asked to rent cars.

“Tourists should act like tourists,” — Gov. Wayne Coster said, “This involves using vehicles prepared by travel agents instead of riding around on motorcycles, without shirts or clothes, without helmets, breaking traffic rules and often without a license at all.” .

About 6.2 million people visited Bali in 2019. Many of these tourists prefer to ride motorcycles, which make it easy to navigate the country's winding roads.

The ban will come into effect later this year. The government has not specified how this will be implemented.

Not everyone is happy with the plans. Dedek Varjana, chairman of Bali's motorcycle rental association, said the authorities should take action on specific violations rather than a blanket ban.
