Airbus A330 Operation Suspended in South Korea Due to a Series of Accidents
< p>Korean Air, the national airline of South Korea, has suspended the operation of its newest Airbus A330-300 aircraft due to a series of accidents.
On October 24, a Korean Air aircraft of this model skidded off the runway. The aircraft was flying from Incheon and twice attempted to land in the Philippines in bad weather.
The landing was successful only on the third attempt, but it turned out to be extremely hard. There were 162 passengers and 11 crew members on board. They were evacuated on life slides. The aircraft was partially destroyed.
October 30, another Korean Air aircraft of the same model was on a Seoul-Sydney flight. Immediately after takeoff, one of the engines caught fire and failed. The crew decided to immediately return to the airport of departure. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely.
These two incidents prompted the company to conduct an internal investigation. All 24 Airbus A330-300 aircraft from the Korean Air fleet will remain on the ground during the trial. Six older Airbus A330 models will be permanently retired.
